since there has been questions asked on , bodies, lenses, flashes , processing software, back ups and even photo hosting . so I have to ask, what printers do you guy(and gals) like. pros and cons, and what about paper.

Just want to thank everybody again, your pics always remind me how much I suck. Doug

Epson over HP anyday!

I only use Epson printers, and i use Ilford paper (sometimes Epson too). I had an Epson 7600 but sold it since i really didnt use it much. I have an R1800 that i have been using for awhile now.

I use a hi-speed dye sub printer for my 8x10s (Shinko s1245) but for a moderately priced ink jet printer I use the Epson R1800 just like Kelly. I haven't used any of the newer models Epson has put out since the R1800. I see they have a R1900 now for $550.

My R1800 seems to be pretty conservative on ink consumption too. I know I printed around 40 11x14s in one weekend a few months ago and only changed 3 cartridges that were already partially low. Printer will print up to 13x19. I use Epson Premium Glossy for Glossy prints and Ilford's Smooth Pearl if I want more of a matte finish.

Chris how is that smooth pearl? Ive been meaning to try it. Is it more like a traditional print you'd get from a photo store or more matte than that?

I use an Epson R1800 with a Niagara continous flow ink system.

Never have to buy another ink cartridge again ! Oh and by the
way, the R1800 is replaced by the R1900, basicly the same unit,
just uses a couple of different colors.

Kelly,

It's in between a matte and glossy. It's not dull but it has texture to it. I kinda like it for black and white stuff i do for myself from time to time. I don't use it for customer work unless someone were to request a matte print. It's about as close to a photo lab matte print as i've seen from an ink jet but to be totally honest i'm a glossy fan and haven't tried much else.

JMAST,
Do the colors pretty well compare to Epson on that ink system in your prints? looks like aftermarket inks from the picture. I've never tried any kind of aftermarket inks but never read any bad stories from those that have...

Cool thanks for the info! I was thinking of trying it for my B&W stuff also. Yea im more of a glossy fan, and use the smooth gloss for my customers too. But since i am switching gears to the portraits i thought the pearl might be something nice to offer as well.

Thanks Chris, as far as the comparison of ink goes, I could not tell you. When I bought the printer, I didn't even install the original cartridges, I just went with the Media Street system from the start.
I have no complaints what so ever. Try this link. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=330642&highlight=epson+r1800+niagara
