Photobucket has so many pop up's it drives you nuts, so whats a good one that lets you water mark and keep people from copying. I got 15 years worth of pic's to down load. LOL I looked at smug mug but I'm not sure what to watch for.

I just started with smugmug and love it. if you go with the highest package you can watermark and all that. Also you can purchase back up fore the site.
I've got both smugmug and zenfolio accounts and can go with either one. I guess if I had to suggest something then smugmug would win for auto related stuff based on ezprints being their print supplier and zenfolio would win for people related stuff to go along with mpix as their supplier. As for the actual hosting, it's pretty even between them. Maybe smugmug if you plan to store raw files but I only upload jpg files so it doesn't matter much to me.

I prefer smugmug, a much easier site to work with and the tech support is awesome, it very well could be your one stop shop for anything photo wise.

the tradeoff with most of those commerical hosting sites is that you are giving 'em all of your traffic... if you decide to change hosts, there go all of your urls, all of the incoming links, and all of the search engine traffic that they generate... you'd be starting over from scratch.
the idea is to build a brand that's based around your name and your website, not a property that belongs to somebody else.
i run my own dedicated server, but it can be a real pain... i've worked with gallery2 in the past, which has great database capabilities, but doesn't rank at all in the search engines for image searches, because of the way that the page titles are set up.
you have to go with what works for you; how many photos you want to put online, whether or not you want to sell photos, etc.
